Notes From The Underground

A collection of thoughts and ideas

Dan Gilmore Previews Film Forum

The Neapolitan Underground Film Forum creates alternative venue for people to come together and discuss film. I believe that film is the most important form of artistic expression and art, in any form, should be discussed. We are slowly introducing the idea to build interest up, and we’ve been selecting more accessible cult films that the average moviegoer may not be familiar with.

This month, we’ll be discussing Stuart Gordon’s 1985 cult classic Re-Animator, which blends humor into the 1922 Lovecraft tale, this is a perfect example of the modern Grand Guignol genre. With the camp and gore that is to be expected from an 80′s horror, Re- Animator should provide a most entertaining viewing experience for anyone.

We’re meeting up at 7:30pm to get into the Halloween spirit before Friday Night’s festivities really take off. So get into character with this film forum before you go out and terrorize the town.

Writer’s Group Recap (July 2nd, 2014)

Last night, our freshly minted Naples Writer’s Workshop convened for its second time, taking on interesting allegorical prose piece, standard fiction, and an interesting form of creative non-fiction. Kristine Gill (Naples Daily News) lead the group, and offered wonderful insight, as did many of the other participants. This is one of the strongest creative groups that we have seen come together, and expect gains and strides, and ultimately, to see some published work from the group. We are looking forward to next week’s meeting–Wednesday, July 9th, 2014. Come with your writing, or an open mind if you’re interested.

FIRESALE Recap (June 28th, 2014)

We had a bittersweet send off for our beloved Admin Center, whose life was just taking its first breaths when it ceased. Marty Walsh eloquently wrote a description for the event:

Due to unfortunate circumstances this will be our last weekend at the Neapolitan Underground HQ. We never really got to utilize the space as we had planned, but none the less we are going to have one last event.

The Shut It Down, Blow It Out Event is us throwing everything including the kitchen sink at you. A fire sale of sorts. Come on down Saturday, June 28th for food, drinks, and laughs. Featuring another Pitchmen performance, as well as a show by the Neapolitan Underground Improv Troupe. We also plan to grill some food, and have some drinks before, after and during.

So come say goodbye to the warehouse with us, and help us end this chapter with a bang.

There were a total of six pitches by Mike Jones, JP Montoulieu, Derek Perry, Kevin Kelly, Dana Foht, and Eric Perry. Also, Aubrey Bierra was a contestant on “Is That My Significant Other?”. Another game show “Friend or Asshole”, pitted contestants against themselves to determine whether or not a zoomed-in photo was a friend of theirs or a rump. Afterwards, Neapolitan notable (and Pitchmen! alumni) Monica Cabada supplied friends and attendees alike with sparklers–a fun way to end the evening.

Film Forum Recap (July 13th, 2014)

Marty Walsh’s brain child came to fruition on July 13th, 2014–marking a first ever foray into motion pictures by our humble organization. The film forum, with an “aim is to promote discussion throughout the community by bringing individuals together to watch movies”, was extremely successful. Nearly forty people got together for the sake of film and helped to cultivate a community in which media is presented and discussed. In addition, Marty Walsh screen printed posters that went home with everybody, in addition to popcorn bags that were hand stamped by a pattern hand carved into woodblock by Mike Rhodes.
